Michael Gonzalez, 47, a devoted community advocate and minister in the Bronx, was savagely attacked as he attempted to return home early on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.

Unfortunately, this attack is just one of numerous that have occurred in recent months. What is more concerning is that, despite Gonzalez’ repeated calls for assistance, officers from the New York Police Department’s 49th Precinct in the Bronx have done little to intervene or provide safety.

Gonzalez, a passionate advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community, says he is being targeted solely because of his sexual orientation. Individuals residing in his building have harassed him on the streets as well as within his apartment complex. In New York City, such targeted harassment is considered a hate crime, but Gonzalez’s calls for justice have gone ignored.

Despite having strong video proof of the attacks, Gonzalez maintains that the 49th Precinct has neglected to file charges against his attackers. Worse, he claims that police officers have failed to make formal reports in similar cases, leaving him without critical paperwork. This has hindered his relocation plans, as city organizations demand a police report to expedite housing help. Without the appropriate documents, Gonzalez’s situation has deteriorated as he seeks to flee the unpleasant atmosphere he has been forced to endure.

Gonzalez told a case worker from a local agency that the lack of a police report is slowing down his relocation process. The case worker stated that without official paperwork, it is very impossible to speed up the transition to safer housing. However, thanks to multiple videos of the attacks, as well as a letter of support from the nonprofit Devil Dog USA incorporated, Gonzalez’ cause is now receiving the attention it deserves.

In his hunt for justice, Gonzalez has contacted his local councilwoman, Kristy Marmorato, as well as other politicians and groups. All have voiced worry over the issue and agree that such hate-motivated harassment has no place in the city.

Despite the persistent hurdles, Gonzalez remains hopeful that his case will be resolved soon. He has asked anyone who wants to help or support him to reach out as he continues to battle for his safety and dignity.

The video above, recorded earlier this morning, shows Gonzalez being attacked as he attempts to enter his building. The clip serves as a terrifying reminder of the everyday harassment he experiences, emphasizing the critical need for help.

A surveillance video clip of the suspects is attached and available at DCPI.
