Janet Sabel, Attorney-in-Chief and CEO of The Legal Aid Society, released the following response to a report issued by the New York State Office of Court Administration (OCA) examining racial and other biases within New York’s court system:
“This report confirms what our clients and staff experience daily. Racial prejudice and other biases are very much embedded in our court system and decisive action is needed immediately.
“The Legal Aid Society was proud to participate in this review, and we commend OCA for conducting a thorough examination resulting in these action items.
“Although more work is needed to root out the many different forms of discrimination facing our clients and staff each day in court, this report is a promising first step, and we encourage OCA to conduct these reviews periodically to ensure that our courts can finally make good on their promise of justice for all who appear before them.”
