On Thursday, February 6, 2025, Hostos Community College became the epicenter of innovation and progress as the Center for an Urban Future, sponsored by Verizon, hosted Ideas for Creating a Stronger and More Equitable Bronx. The event gathered organizations from across the borough—each with a bold vision to uplift and transform their communities.

The night was filled with compelling idea pitches from activists, business leaders, nonprofit organizations, and entrepreneurs, all dedicated to strengthening the Bronx’s diverse communities. Local officials, including Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, Assembly Member Amanda Septimo, and Council Member Althea Stevens, listened intently, alongside business leaders and community members, as ambitious proposals were unveiled.

Setting the stage for an evening of impactful discussions, Jonathan Bowles, Executive Director of the Center for an Urban Future, delivered opening remarks, highlighting the organization’s commitment to expanding transformative programs in the Bronx. This was followed by a fireside chat with Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, who reflected on her achievements, outlined her continued efforts to uplift the borough, and emphasized her dedication to collaborating with organizations seeking funding for their initiatives.

The heart of the event was the idea pitches, where at least ten different individuals and organizations presented groundbreaking proposals aimed at addressing the Bronx’s most pressing issues. Among the speakers were Rocky Bucano, Founder and Executive Director of the Hip Hop Museum, Debbie Roman, New York Managing Director of Per Scholas, and Yasmin Cruz, Executive Director of the Westchester Square Business Improvement District. These were just a few of the visionaries who shared their transformative ideas. The proposals ranged from workforce development programs to youth education initiatives and elder care solutions, each designed to meet the borough’s unique challenges.

Two dynamic panel discussions brought together local organizations and elected officials, each sharing how they are driving change in their own way. They explored strategies for expanding their reach and strengthening their impact on the community, offering insight into their plans for a more prosperous Bronx.

The event concluded with an open-floor audience pitch session, where attendees had the opportunity to present their own ideas directly to decision-makers. Community members seized the moment to showcase their work, advocate for their causes, and build essential connections with those who could help bring their visions to life.

As the evening came to a close, one thing was clear—the Bronx is brimming with innovative ideas, passionate leaders, and a shared determination to build a stronger, more equitable future for the Bronx.
