New York City Commissioner of the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection Peter A. Hatch and Corporation Counsel Georgia M. Pestana issued a statement today following a court ruling upholding the city’s Fair Workweek Law. The measure prohibits fast food employers from discharging employees without just cause, and requires employers to implement fair disciplinary processes.

Commissioner of the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection Peter A. Hatch and Corporation Counsel Georgia M. Pestana said:

“For too long, fast food workers—a predominately minority and female workforce—have been treated unfairly, yet they have been there for us on the frontlines throughout the pandemic. We applaud the court for giving workers the justice they deserve by upholding this vital law so fast food workers cannot be fired on a whim. As our city recovers, protections like “just cause” under the Fair Workweek Law will bring much-needed stability—and the opportunity for economic mobility—to the lives of these workers.”
