Cardi B is not the only rapper from the birthplace of hip hop to pick up buzz in 2017.
South Bronx rapper Maliibu Miitch made some noise earlier this year with the release of her single “4AM.” It’s got an auto-tuned hook and a metallic beat that sounds like modern trap, but Miitch blesses the song with badass, in-your-face bars that recall the 1990s era of New York that she grew up in. (Like Cardi B, she’s also got a thick Bronx accent.) In case you’re wondering just which ’90s rappers Miitch digs, she gives you her Top 5 in the form a mixtape called Top 5, where she freestyles over famous songs by Lil Kim (“Crush On You”), Foxy Brown (“Gotta Get You Home”), Lauryn Hill (“Doo Wop”), Eve (“Who’s That Girl”), and Missy Elliott (“Supa Dupa Fly”). Those freestyles, especially the “Doo Wop” one, are as worth hearing as her original songs.
Maliibu Miitch is keeping the momentmum going with the release of a new single, “Gwapamole.” It’s got a similar vibe to “4AM,” with an instantly-catchy modern hook mixed with the rhymes she grew up on, and it’s more proof that Miitch is someone worth keeping an eye on. Listen to the new single, watch the “4AM” video, and stream the Top 5 mixtape below.
Maliibu Miitch played her hometown earlier this summer, opening for Tee Grizzley at a Hot 97’s Who’s Next party at SOB’s. (Did you catch her set?) No other live dates booked at the moment, but we’ll let you know when one is.
