We are deeply troubled and saddened by the recent subway incident involving Anthony “Fox 5” Griffin. Our hearts go out to every individual who was harmed, and we are lifting the victims and their families up in prayer during this difficult time.
Anthony has been present in our community for years. He is well known, loved, and respected. He has worked alongside The Alpha and Omega Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Inc. doing food pantries. He has also been active with The Hug, The Block Foundation during food drives, clothing giveaways, and outreach efforts. He consistently spoke about peace, growth, and uplifting others. Anthony Griffin also graduated from technical schools in California and received his HVAC certification. He was a battle rap legend and respected MC.
I also want to be clear—Anthony never presented himself as anything negative, nor did he ever call himself “Lucifer” or “the devil.” That narrative does not reflect the man we knew. He always spoke about God. He always gave praises to God.
This situation is heartbreaking and difficult to understand. Based on what we have known of Anthony, this behavior is not reflective of the character he has shown in our community.
We are calling for a full and thorough investigation, including a toxicology report, to better understand what may have contributed to this incident.
At the same time, we must address the larger issue. If we had stronger public safety measures and proper access to mental health services in our communities, situations like this could potentially be prevented. There must be more resources, more intervention, and more support before situations escalate.
We also question whether this situation had to end the way it did. There are serious concerns that need to be addressed regarding response and de-escalation.
On behalf of our community, we are calling on the Mayor to do a better job in prioritizing mental health services, community safety, and ensuring that the New York City Police Department (NYPD) is equipped with the proper training to handle situations like this with care and de-escalation when possible.
In moments like this, we are reminded of the importance of compassion, accountability, and unity. We stand with the victims, their families, and our entire community as we seek healing, truth, and justice.
