Turner Construction Company, the nation’s largest builder of green buildings and education facilities, has been selected by the New York School Construction Authority (SCA) to manage construction for the $83 million new settlement community campus for students in grades 1-12 in the South Bronx, New York.
The ground breaking ceremony was held yesterday and the campus is scheduled for completion in 2012. The event takes place some 30 years after arsen was burning down the neighbourhood.
The new settlement community campus is being designed to meet The New York City School Construction Authority’s Green Standards, including waste recycling and the use of local building materials within a 500 mile radius.
The scope of work includes construction of a primary, intermediate and high school and community center. The school will contain classrooms, administrative offices and facilities, a student cafeteria, kitchen, gymnasium and library.
“We are extremely proud to serve as part of the building team on this important project to benefit the students and surrounding community served by this education campus,” said Charles Murphy, senior vice president and general manager of Turner’s New York office.
