By Jonas BronckOn a bitterly cold Sunday night, February 1, 2026, the Bronx gathered indoors for something unmistakably warm in spirit. The occasion was the second term inauguration of Vanessa L. Gibson. The setting was Lehman College’s Performing Arts Center, chosen on the first day of Black History Month. From the opening moments, the evening signaled that this was as much about legacy as it was about direction.
Before a single oath was spoken, the ceremony opened with culture. Bombazo Dance Company, a Bronx based nonprofit dedicated to Afro Puerto Rican Bomba traditions, transformed the stage into a living dialogue between drum and dancer. The performance anchored the evening in ancestry, movement, and continuity, serving as a reminder that the Bronx leads not only through policy, but through culture.
The program then turned formal under the guidance of Mistress of Ceremonies Debralee Santos, Editor in Chief of the Manhattan Times and Bronx…

New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli is reminding New Yorkers on National Unclaimed Property Day that they may have money waiting for them, and it only takes a few minutes to check osc.ny.gov/unclaimed-funds.
Unclaimed Property Day is a national initiative to help raise awareness about forgotten funds and help reunite people with their money. In 2025 alone, the Comptroller’s office returned more than $580 million dollars to rightful owners, including creating a new fast-track program that sends checks in the mail with no claim form required.
“Spend a few minutes on Unclaimed Property Day checking for your lost money,” said DiNapoli. “It is free, easy, and the money is yours. Lost funds can come from an uncashed check, an unused gift card or a forgotten refund, even small amounts can add up.”
Unclaimed funds occur when people forget about or lose track of their money. These funds can come from utility deposits, trust funds, old bank accounts, uncashed checks or unused gift cards. These funds never expire, and it is quick and easy to check the website.
Thanks to a new law championed by DiNapoli, New Yorkers are seeing faster returns for some lost money. In January 2025, the Office of Unclaimed Funds (OUF) began mailing checks for certain newly reported accounts of $250 or less to eligible individuals. More than 155,000 checks, totaling over $13.6 million, have already been sent.
Every day, the State Comptroller’s office returns over $2 million and can track and uncover lost financial assets dating as far back as the 1940s.
To help New Yorkers claim what’s theirs, staff from the State Comptroller’s office attend community events across the state…

The credibility of Wikipedia, long promoted as a neutral global encyclopedia, has suffered a serious blow. A new investigation has revealed that the government of Qatar secretly paid a powerful London public relations firm to manipulate Wikipedia content for more than a decade. The operation was designed to erase damaging information about migrant worker deaths, labor abuses, and lawsuits connected to preparations for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The revelations expose how wealthy governments and corporations can quietly rewrite history online. They also highlight the growing crisis of trust facing digital information platforms that millions of people rely on every day.
The Wikilaundering Operation
From 2011 until 2022, Portland Communications, a prominent crisis communications and reputation management agency based in London, carried out an organized campaign to edit Wikipedia pages on behalf of Qatar. According to reporting by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, employees at the firm used at least 26 fake accounts to alter and sanitize articles related to Qatar.
These accounts, known as sockpuppets, posed as ordinary volunteer editors while systematically removing negative material. References to migrant worker deaths were deleted. Details about lawsuits and labor complaints vanished. Critical language was softened or replaced with promotional descriptions of progress and development.
The campaign operated quietly for 11 years. During that time, ordinary readers had no way to know that the information they were seeing had been carefully curated by a public relations firm acting…
