World leaders continue to repeat claims about Israel that collapse under basic scrutiny. Four recent statements stand out for their distance from documented reality. Each one softens or erases the record of terrorism, double standards, and institutional failure. The facts remain available to anyone willing to look.
Emmanuel Macron: “Hamas Has Never Operated In The West Bank”
French President Emmanuel Macron told the United Nations General Assembly that Hamas has never operated in the West Bank. The claim is false.
Hamas has maintained a presence and operational capacity in the West Bank since the late 1980s. The group has carried out hundreds of attacks from the territory, including suicide bombings during the Second Intifada and ongoing shootings and stabbings. Just this week a Hamas terrorist murdered Netanel Shukrun, a 30-year-old father of six, while he was at a spring with his children ahead of Yom Kippur. Israeli officials immediately cited the attack as a direct rebuttal to Macron.
Hamas does not govern the West Bank the way it governs Gaza. That distinction does not equal absence. The organization recruits, arms, and directs attacks from the territory. Treating the West Bank as a Hamas-free zone requires ignoring decades of blood and the most recent murder. Macron’s statement does not survive contact with the record.
Zohran Mamdani: “I Cannot Support Israel’s Existence Because It Is A Jewish State That Privileges One Religion”
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has stated that he cannot support any state that privileges one religion, and he applies that standard to Israel as a Jewish state. He has said he supports Israel only as a state with equal rights, not as a Jewish state.
Around 83 countries in the world maintain an official state religion or grant special legal privileges to one faith. These include multiple Muslim-majority nations, Christian-majority nations in Europe, and others. Mamdani does not campaign against the existence of those states. The only country whose foundational identity as a nation-state for a particular people he singles out for rejection is the one Jewish state.
Israel grants full citizenship and equal legal rights to its non-Jewish citizens, including Arabs who serve in the Knesset, the judiciary, and the military. The Jewish character of the state is comparable to the way other nations preserve a cultural and historical core while remaining democratic. Singling out the sole Jewish state for existential objection while remaining silent about far more explicit religious hierarchies elsewhere reveals selective standards rather than consistent principle.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan: “Israel’s Hands Are Stained With The Blood Of 75,000 Innocents In Gaza”
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has repeatedly claimed that Israel bears responsibility for the deaths of roughly 75,000 innocents in Gaza, often emphasizing women and children.
Available data shows a different picture. Of the total fatalities reported in Gaza, approximately 23,000 are estimated to have been combatants. That produces a civilian-to-combatant ratio in the range of 2.3 to 1. By comparison, the United States-led campaign against ISIS produced ratios closer to 3 to 1 or higher in urban fighting. Even using the higher total figures circulated by Hamas-run health authorities, the Gaza conflict is not the deadliest of recent years. The Saudi-led intervention in Yemen produced more than 400,000 deaths according to United Nations estimates.
Every civilian death is a tragedy. Inflating the civilian share and erasing the combatant portion serves a political purpose. It converts a war against an embedded terrorist organization that uses human shields into a simple story of indiscriminate slaughter. The numbers do not support that simplification.
António Guterres: “There Has Been No General Commitment By UNRWA To Provide Any Kind Of Support To Hamas”
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has asserted that UNRWA made no general commitment to support Hamas.
The record shows otherwise. The United Nations itself acknowledged that a number of UNRWA staff members were also Hamas operatives, and that some participated in the October 7, 2023 massacre. Israeli intelligence assessments, shared with the UN, estimated that roughly 10 percent of UNRWA’s Gaza workforce had ties to terrorist organizations. Hamas systematically used UNRWA schools, clinics, and compounds for weapons storage, command centers, and tunnel access. These were not isolated rogue employees. They reflected deep penetration of an agency that operates under Hamas governance in Gaza.
Guterres’s formulation attempts to separate the institution from the pattern of collaboration. The evidence of staff involvement in the October 7 attacks and the documented military use of UNRWA facilities makes that separation difficult to sustain.
The Pattern Behind The Statements
These four claims share a common structure. Each one minimizes the agency of terrorist groups, exaggerates Israeli culpability, or applies unique standards to the Jewish state. Macron erases Hamas’s long operational history in the West Bank. Mamdani objects to Jewish national self-determination while ignoring dozens of other states built around a dominant religion or ethnicity. Erdogan presents combat deaths as the slaughter of pure innocents. Guterres downplays the documented overlap between UNRWA personnel and Hamas.
The cumulative effect is to distort the moral and factual landscape. Israel is portrayed as the primary aggressor. Palestinian terrorist organizations are portrayed as marginal or reactive. Institutions that have enabled or coexisted with those organizations receive the benefit of the doubt.
Facts remain stubborn. Hamas has operated in the West Bank for decades and continues to murder civilians there. Dozens of countries maintain official religious identities without facing calls for their dissolution. Civilian-to-combatant ratios in Gaza fall within the range of other urban wars against embedded enemies. UNRWA staff participated in the October 7 massacre and the agency’s facilities served military purposes.
Repeating comfortable falsehoods does not change those realities. It only delays honest reckoning with them.
