Giving Thanks & The Gift Of Literacy: USA Reads Launches Book Drive With New York Food Pantries

As Thanksgiving Break approaches, USA Reads, a national literacy organisation, is teaming up with local Food Pantry groups in New York to deliver children’s books to families facing hardship. This unique partnership aims to provide children from low-income backgrounds with access to books, helping to spark a lifelong love of reading and learning.

Ms. Green, Project Coordinator at USA Reads, highlighted the importance of the initiative: “It os the perfect time to put children’s books into the hands of kids who may not own a single book and to spark a lifelong passion for reading.” This year, USA Reads is collaborating with food pantries across the country to ensure as many children’s books as possible are included in the food baskets distributed to families in need.

“The cost of everything has gone up,” Ms. Green said. “Parents are constantly making decisions about whether to pay for food, rent, or medication. Sadly, food is often the first thing to be sacrificed, and buying books for their kids is mostly overlooked. Education is the key that unlocks future opportunities, yet so many children miss out on early reading development due to limited access to books.”

Ms. Green also cited research showing the strong link between poverty and low literacy. “At USA Reads, we are addressing both, working to nourish bodies, support learning, and build a stronger, more connected community,” she said.

USA Reads is calling on the community to help make a difference this Thanksgiving. “If you are searching for a simple yet meaningful way to give thanks this year, consider sharing the gift of reading,” Ms. Green encouraged. A donation of $10 will provide two books to children in need, while $200 supplies forty books, each one a chance to inspire and educate.

With several days off for Thanksgiving, it is a great opportunity to encourage kids to fill their break with reading, whether they are travelling, at home, or visiting family. Donations received by Monday, November 24, 2025, will be converted into books and delivered to children who need them most, making this holiday truly special for them.
