Bronx Community College’s (BCC) Division of Advancement, Communications, and External Relations in collaboration with Academic Affairs today announced that BCC will receive a $1,276,411 Perkins V grant to improve career and technical education (CTE) programs. The grant, funded by the New York State Education Department, is named in honor of U.S. Representative Carl D. Perkins. Perkins, a Kentucky congressman from 1949 to 1984 who championed CTE programs and advocated for students to gain the academic and technical skills needed for high-demand careers.

The funding will support BCC’s Tutoring, Career Services, Allied Health, Education, and Cybersecurity on both the credit and noncredit levels. It also will provide student textbooks, supplies, and other essential resources (such as a partnership with Handshake and certification expenses) in addition to staffing support in these five areas.

“This grant is important for BCC because it provides funds for necessary equipment, supplies and materials to support CTE programs; helps align the programs with the needs of the local Bronx economy, and prepares students for careers in fields that are in demand,” said Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Luis Montenegro.

Each year, the College is required to complete a lengthy application process to be considered for the Perkins grant. A portion of the funding is dedicated to assisting students with disabilities through tutoring and content specialization.
