On June 8, 2024, women from various parts of the Bronx gathered for a self-defense class led by Master CJ Rivera, presented by Devil Dog USA Incorporated in collaboration with the Bronx Veteran Chamber of Commerce.
Master Rivera addressed the participants on the importance of self-protection, when to use it, and the correct techniques. He demonstrated the moves with his Sempai, Katie Rivera, who is both his student and daughter. Following the demonstration, the women practiced the techniques, receiving a rigorous workout.

Gonzalo Duran, Chief Executive Officer of Devil Dog USA Incorporated, explained that the program was initiated late last year and officially began this year. “We started our first class in our office with a handful of neighborhood individuals. By our third lesson, we needed a larger venue,” Duran stated. “These last two events have focused solely on women due to the increase in attacks across the city.”
Master Rivera highlighted a recent incident where a woman was attacked with a belt around her neck, which influenced the maneuvers taught in today’s lesson.
Duran mentioned that they have secured dates and funding for future classes but are in need of more venues. “These events keep growing. The women want these classes, and we are glad to provide them throughout the Bronx, but we need people to reach out to us.”
After the event, the women shared their personal experiences and the reasons they joined the class. Their stories underscored the need for more community events like this one.
Duran thanked everyone for attending and acknowledged Caldwell Enrichment Programs Incorporated for their collaboration and Caldwell Temple, A.M.E. Zion Church for hosting the event.
