On Tuesday, December 4, 2018 (tomorrow), Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and City Council Member Ritchie Torres of Bronx will visit the scene of New York City’s deadliest fire in 25 years to announce the details of the implementation of new fire safety laws designed to prevent future tragedies, and where residents can get free stove knob safety covers to prevent children from playing with stoves.
In December 2017, a fire in a residential building on Prospect Avenue in the Belmont section of The Bronx led to 13 deaths. Investigators found that the fire was started by a three-year-old child playing with the stove in his apartment, and quickly grew out of control.
The event will start at 10:00 a.m. at 2363 Prospect Avenue (at E. 187th Street), Bronx, NY 10458.
