Judith Goldiner, Attorney-in-Charge of the Civil Law Reform Unit at The Legal Aid Society, released the below statement in response to Executive Order No. 202.66, issued today by Governor Andrew Cuomo.
“What Governor Cuomo issued today is a hollow moratorium – a moratorium in name only – which does not build on the tenant protections already afforded by the Federal government and the Tenant Safe Harbor Act. Come Thursday, evictions will recommence in New York State, just in time for cold weather and the resurgence of CoViD-19. Governor Cuomo has made it abundantly clear to New York tenants that they are on their own.
“Senate Majority Leader Steward-Cousins and Assembly Speaker Heastie must fill this void in leadership. A package of legislation that would provide the robust relief that our clients deserve has been pending in the Legislature for months, ready for a debate and a vote. We call on Legislators to advance these measures immediately.”
About The Legal Aid Society
The Legal Aid Society exists for one simple yet powerful reason: to ensure that New Yorkers are not denied their right to equal justice because of poverty. For over 140 years, we have protected, defended, and advocated for those who have struggled in silence for far too long. Every day, in every borough, The Legal Aid Society changes the lives of our clients and helps improve our communities.
