A brand-new, green, affordable housing building intended for senior citizens has opened in Riverdale.
The ribbon-cutting of Selfhelp Community Services’ Van Cortlandt Green was made possible by numerous local leaders and organizations, but it grew out of some controversy. In 2013, area residents rejected the original proposal that included housing for both seniors and the mentally disabled.
Plans were changed to make the building an energy-efficient, seniors-only project.
The 58-unit apartment building provides residents with a bird’s-eye view of Van Cortlandt Park.
