Even English ladies like the future Duchess of Devonshire helped with the war effort during World War II.

This video features women from the other side of the Atlantic: the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service.) The WAVES were a formal branch of the U.S. Navy, and few people today are aware of how many of them – over 80,000 young women from all over the country – did their boot camp training on the Bronx campus of Hunter College.

Author Nancy Lynch Castellano was one of the reservists, and she shares her experiences in this wonderful short video, created by the New-York Historical Society.
