Deaths in the Family

It is with sadness that the New York City Police Department announces the deaths of three members of our family.

Detective Jeffrey Scalf, assigned to the Gang Squad in the Bronx, passed away today, Monday, April 13, 2020, from complications related to the coronavirus.

Detective Scalf became a member of the NYPD on January 31, 2006.

Detective Raymond Abear, assigned to the Special Victims Squad in Queens, passed away today, Monday, April 13, 2020, from complications related to the coronavirus.

Detective Abear became a member of the NYPD on July 01, 2001.

Auxiliary Police Captain Mohamed Rahaman, assigned to the 115th Precinct, passed away on Sunday, April 12, 2020, from complications related to the coronavirus.

Auxiliary Police Captain Rahaman became a member of the NYPD on December 14, 1989.

22-Day Period Citywide Patrol Statistics

Officers have visited a total of 303,330 locations as part of the Department’s efforts to help flatten the curve through promoting social distancing.

Some officers have encountered challenges at religious events & funerals, efforts were geared toward maintaining the dignity of those events while insisting on dispersal of groups to ensure social distancing. 

Between 08:00 a.m., Monday, March 23, 2020 and 03:00 p.m., Monday, April 13, 2020:

  • NYPD officers made visits to 54,101 supermarkets and pharmacies of which 27,648 were closed.
  • NYPD officers made visits to 153,481 bars and restaurants of which 119,581 were closed.
  • NYPD officers made visits to 26,589 public places of which 15,580 were closed.
  • NYPD officers made visits to 69,132 personal care facilities of which 68,075 were closed.

The NYPD’s efforts have resulted in nearly 100 percent compliance as evidenced by the small number of arrests & summonses. Between March 17, 2020 and April 13, 2020, 76 summonses have been issued and 15 arrests have been made citywide.

24-Hour Period Citywide Patrol Statistics

Officers continue to visit restaurants, bars, supermarkets, salons and public spaces to remind individuals of the ban on congregating in public spaces and to practice social distancing.

Between 08:00 a.m., Sunday, April 12, 2020 and 08:00 a.m., Monday, April 13, 2020:

  • NYPD officers visited 2,463 supermarkets and pharmacies of which 1,346 were closed.
  • NYPD officers visited 6,954 bars and restaurants of which 5,585 were closed. 
  • NYPD officers visited 1,196 public places of which 749 were closed. 
  • NYPD officers visited 3,201 personal care facilities of which 3,201 were closed. 

No summonses were issued in regard to these visits. One arrest was made within the confines of the 114th Precinct in regard to an individual operating a motor vehicle inside of a park on pedestrian walkways.

NYPD Officers on Sick Report

On Monday, April 13, 2020, 6,380 uniformed members of the NYPD were on sick report which accounts for 17.60% of the Department’s uniformed workforce. Currently, 2,334 uniformed members and 503 civilian members tested positive for the coronavirus. 

For the fourth consecutive day more officers have returned to work than have gone sick resulting in our total sick rate to decrease during the same time period.

Since March 24, 2020, 837 uniformed members and 90 civilian members have returned to full duty after testing positive for coronavirus.
