The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently released a report for estimated road deaths in the United States for the first nine months of 2021, and the news is not good.

The report estimates there were 31,720 fatalities caused by motor vehicle road collisions between January and September 2021.

That is a rise of 12% in comparison to the same time period for the previous year. Furthermore, the 2021 statistics represent the highest number of road deaths in the first nine months of a year since 2006.

Not only that. The increase is also the highest percentage rise of road fatalities in the history of the reporting system, which began all the way back in 1975.

So, unfortunately, U.S. road deaths are rising at a record pace.

The U.S. Transportation Department is calling for better safety standards to be included in vehicles and assisted driving programs to help make the situation better.

In the meantime, we can all play our part in reducing the number of accidents and fatalities on our roads by remembering to drive safely and following the rules of the road at all times, in the Bronx and beyond.

What if You Are the Victim of a Traffic Accident? Hiring a Car Accident Lawyer

If you are involved in a road accident that is not your fault and you sustain injuries, you can at least gain compensation.

Simply get in touch with a car accident lawyer, like one of the experienced attorneys at Finkelstein & Partners, to seek advice and get assistance with your claim.

You could get compensation for things like medical bills, loss of earnings, and pain and suffering.

But by driving safely, you can reduce your risk of being involved in a vehicle accident, to begin with.

Driving Safely in the Bronx

In the Bronx, traffic accidents are lower than in some parts of the country, but certain roadways are renowned for posing greater risks.

More accidents are reported at the intersections of E. 138th Street and Alexander Avenue, E. Fordham Road and Southern Boulevard, E. 135th Street and Willis Avenue, E. 149th Street and Morris Avenue, and E. Fordham Road and Jerome Avenue than anywhere else in the area.

So, if you want to reduce the risk of being injured in an accident in the Bronx, avoid those intersections if possible or make sure you take extra care.

Tips for Driving Safely

Whether you are driving in the Bronx or elsewhere, you can stay safe by sticking to the following advice.

Never Speed

Speeding endangers your life and others. In fact, approximately 30% of all road deaths occur simply because a driver is going too fast.

So, sticking to speed limits, and driving slower than the speed limit on some roads, really can save lives.

Never Get Distracted

More accidents happen from drivers being distracted than any other cause.

Distractions behind the wheel include texting, eating, smoking, and changing the radio station. Anything that causes you to be distracted or take your eyes off the road, even if for just a moment, can result in accidents. So never get distracted when driving.

Drive Defensively

Just because you drive correctly, it does not mean all other drives will; especially in busy areas like the Bronx.

Other drivers may not stick to their lanes, swerve unexpectedly, or not leave sufficient space between bumpers.

It is not only other drivers you need to look out for. In cities, there are more pedestrians and cyclists around, and many will move into traffic when they are not supposed to, so always keep an eye out for pedestrians and cyclists.

Drive defensively and always look out for unexpected behavior and you can reduce your chances of being involved in a road accident.
