The New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NYS AHPERD) kicked off the 1st GET MOVING NY Events that took place around New York State during National Physical Education and Sport Week May 1-7, 2013.
The Center for Disease Control recommends 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily. In an effort to spread this word, the NYS AHPERD organized the 1st GET MOVING NY Events to combat obesity and promote fitness. Acknowledging that more than one-third of adults (35.7%) in the United States are obese, and, obesity affects 17% of all children and adolescents in the United States, triple the rate from just one generation ago, we need to do all we can to reverse this health crisis.
“Our aim is to encourage parents and teachers to help children explore a wide variety of physical activities to determine what they like and encourage them to participate in those activities on a regular basis. We utilize this nationwide occasion to raise obesity awareness and emphasize the value of physical education in schools. Physical education is important in fostering physically active students with healthy life-long habits,” says Srecko Mavrek, President-Elect, the NYC Zone of the NYS AHPERD.
The NYC Zone of the NYS AHPERD in partnership with the School Wellness Councils of Fordham Leadership Academy and West Bronx Academy for the Future hosted two events at Theodore Roosevelt Educational Campus in the Bronx last Saturday – the 1st NYC Schools’ Hula-Hoop Championship and the 1st NYC Schools’ Free Throw & Three-Point Contest.
