As of of December 22, 2020, New York State has received 630,000 vaccine doses. So far, approximately 140,000 doses have been administered throughout New York. The state expects to receive approximately 259,000 additional doses this week.
Two vaccines have been authorized by the FDA. The first, developed by Pfizer and BioNTech, was approved unanimously by New York State’s independent CoViD-19 Clinical Advisory Task Force on December 10, 2020 and formally authorized by the FDA on December 11, 2020. The second, developed by Moderna, was authorized by the FDA and approved unanimously by the Clinical Advisory Task Force on December 18, 2020.
The first New Yorkers to receive the vaccine will be high-risk hospital workers (emergency room workers, ICU staff and Pulmonary Department staff), nursing home residents, nursing home staff, followed by all long-term and congregate care residents and staff, EMS workers, other health care workers, coroners and medical examiners. Staff at every hospital will have access to the first vaccine allocation.
While the vaccination process is underway, all New Yorkers should wear masks, practice social distancing and avoid small and large gatherings.
