Dear Bronx Museum Family,
Like most in the cultural sector and our community, the Bronx Museum has endured some extraordinary challenges in 2020. Our Education team stepped up and quickly pivoted to shift our offerings to an online format. They engaged our Educators and Teen Council who created several virtual arts experiences for students, children, and families expanding virtual learning to our community who otherwise might not have had access to arts education.
Fall and Winter 2020 exhibitions included groundbreaking solo presentations of artists José Parlá and Sanford Biggers. In 2021, as we celebrate the Museum’s Fiftieth Anniversary, exhibitions will feature Shaun Leonardo (a Brooklyn-based artist whose images reflect the systemic oppression and violence against brown and black young men in contemporary American history), Wardell Milan (a Harlem-based artist who explores the insidious normalcy of White supremacy in America), and Faith Ringgold (an exhibition that looks at two important facets of the artist’s career: feminism and education). Also planned are group exhibitions exploring themes of Afro-Asian Futurism and Ballroom culture, and we continue to highlight new perspectives from emerging artists.

Each and every dollar received helps us continue our work and our service to the Bronx community, the New York City community and to an international audience. As you know, the Bronx Museum primarily engages with one of the most ethnically diverse audiences in New York City: in our home borough Latinos and African Americans comprise 80% of the population. We are the poorest congressional district in the nation, with 40% of children in the Bronx living below the federal poverty level. Residents of the Bronx are our primary audience, and the children of the borough benefit most from our free educational programming and opportunities. Your donation helps us meet those needs.
In 2021 we celebrate fifty years of championing the people of the Bronx. We also look to the future with our programming, exhibition, and educational initiatives while remaining true to and recommitting ourselves to the ideals that motivated the community leaders and activists who founded the institution in 1971. During our fiftieth year we renew our investment in our local communities, and our vibrant tapestry of womxn, people of color and LGBTQIA persons. We stand firm in our belief that art and culture are essential on the path to achieving social justice and equity.
