Contrary to popular belief, not all superheroes live in Manhattan. In fact, there are superheroes living in the NY borough of the Bronx. It is true, and on Saturday, May 04, 2014, Free Comic Book Day, one of the better local comic book conventions will be held in the Bronx at the Bronx Library Center at 310 E. Kingsbridge Road, Bronx, NY.
That’s right, This Saturday and Sunday (May 4th & 5th) you can celebrate Free Comic Book Day at the 5th annual Bronx Heroes Comic Conference. This event is a free comicbook convention and conference weekend of workshops, panels as well as a meet and greet of comicbook professionals and emerging artists in the industry. This family friendly event is great for fans of all ages, and this year is being held at a new location, the Bronx Library Center on Fordham Road. Early birds to the show receive a Bronx Heroes bag filled with goodies as well as a free comicbook in honor of Free Comic Book Day.
Confirmed guests of the show include the following: Danny Fingeroth a Marvel legend, best known for being longtime group editor of Spider-Man in the 1980s. Fingeroth has goe on to write several books and has taught comics writing at New York University, The New School, and Media Bistro. He was the founder and editor of Write Now!, a magazine about the craft of writing comics. Don McGregor a veteran comic writer who is best known for his work on the independent comics Detectives Inc. and Sabre, as well as his work on Black Panther and Killraven for Marvel. Gary Cohn, is best known as the co-creator of characters for DC comics Blue Devil and Amethyst: Princess of Gem World, but has written a number of other comics, including Aquaman, Fury of Firestorm, The Warlord, as well as a number of other books, plus he edited for Shi by Billy Tucci for Crusade Comics. Writer/Editor Jim Salicrup, known for his work with Marvel Comics and Topps Comics, who now is currently the head honcho over at Papercutz.
Other guest of the show include, Selina Briggs, Tara Nakashima Donahue, Paris Cullins, Alitha E. Martinez, Daxiong, Mas Media Studios, Micheal Klein (Moonbase Comics), Eric Nocella Diaz, J.M Desantis, Power Smith Studios, Chris Duckett, David Quinn, Eric Rivera, Wilson Ramos, Michele St. Martin, Emilio Velez Jr., Mark Mazz (Atlas Unleashed), and many others. The mission of the Bronx Heroes Comic Book Convention is to make connections within the Bronx community by providing interested parties with an opportunity to meet both professional and emerging artists in the comicbook industry, allowing them to learn about the potential career opportunities that exist in the comic book and publishing industry. Promoters of the event wish to promote literacy through the presentation of teaching artist and writer panels, in order to foster a new generation of readers.
The Bronx Heroes Comic Con strives to promote the understanding and appreciation of graphic novels and comic book art. In addition, as stated, Bronx Heroes is proud to be a part of the national Free Comic Book Day celebration. In addition to the many comicbook artists and writers the day will feature graphics displays, writing, and educational programs for all ages. This event is a great opportunity to meet comicbook creators both from the Bronx, and surrounding region, as well as a place to buy Indy comics and collectables. The convention features free workshops, panels, portfolio reviews, and more.
The Bronx Heroes Comic Con this year being held at the Bronx Library Center, on Saturday, May 04, 2013 from noon to 06:00 p.m. and Sunday, May 5, 2013 from 01:00 p.m. to 05:00 p.m.
