GM John Idzik and front office can give themselves a pat on the back as rookie DT Sheldon Richardson won the AP defensive rookie of the year award on Saturday.

Richardson who was selected 13th overall in the 2013 draft, had an outstanding season. Recording 42 tackles, 3.5 sacks and one forced fumble. Not to mention, Richardson was also used as a running back the last couple of weeks of the NFL season and managed to pick up two touchdowns.

“It took a lot of hardwork, a lot of hours and a lot of dedication.” Richardson said at the NFL honors last night. “Thanks to Rex, John Idzik and the Jets organization for giving me that call on draft night.”

Richardson won the award right in front of Bills LB Kiko Alonso as they were the remaining two candidates.

Sheldon was personally shocked finding out that he won with all of the other top rookie defensive players like Tyrann Mathieu from the Cardinals.

“I’m surprised.” Richardson said. “Kiko made tons of tackles, Mathieu made great plays but he got hurt. It was a really close race.”

One former NFL defensive back/HOF and now NFL network analyst, Warren Sapp did not have great things to say about Richardson at the Honors last night according to the NYDN.

“Let’s not anoint this kid as the next best thing since sliced bread yet.” Sapp said. “He is not highly skilled of a pass rusher either.”

Sheldon spoke on  Sapp’s comment briefly.

“I have no idea.” Richardson said. “At this point, I really don’t care.”
