Sen. Jeff Klein, D-Bronx, the leader of the independent Democratic conference, held a news conference earlier this afternoon with his three colleagues calling for a streamlining of government.
Along with Sens. David Valesky, of Syracuse, David Carlucci of Clarkstown, Rockland County, and Dian Savino of Staten Island, Klein issued a report that called for stricter standards of state contractors, clamping down on overtime and the elimination of duplicative administrative positions.
He also said he opposed linking the property tax cap supported by Gov. Andrew Cuomo to extending and possibly expanding rent regulations, an idea suggested by Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, D-Manhattan.
“Personally I think two pieces of legislation are important, which is making sure rent regulations continue in New York City, which I support wholeheartedly, and the property tax cap, but I think they are completely different issues,” Klein said.
