“Seeding Our Futures” is the first-panel discussion and community conversation in our series, Artists Engage. Research has shown that climate change disproportionately impacts Black, indigenous and people of color.

In New York, and Bronx in particular, as the land changes and development rises, there are increasingly scarce food sources, shrinking green spaces, and a lack of support for people living and creating within their communities.

Artists are often able to tap into the world around them in order to give light to current lived experiences, and/or illuminate the way to new possibilities. “Seeding Our Futures” addresses the intersections of sustainability, social justice and art-making.

This conversation will provide an examination of working at the intersection of arts and climate change and engagement with climate change through artistic practices.

Invited artists:

Sajata Epps aka SAJATA-E is a clothing-textile/Environmental artist running a handmade and socially responsible eco-lifestyle brand from the South Bronx.

Karen Washington is a community gardener and board member of the New York Botanical Gardens, and worked with Bronx neighborhoods to turn empty lots into community gardens since 1985.

Jamie Martinez is the publisher of Arte Fuse, and the founder and director of The Border Project Space, which was recently featured in Hyperallergic’s top 15 shows of 2018.

This free event will take place on Saturday, November 23, 2019, between the hours of 03:00 p.m. and 04:30 p.m.

About Bronx Council On The Arts

Founded by visionary community leaders in 1962, the Bronx Council on the Arts (BCA) is dedicated to advancing cultural equity in Bronx. From creative placemaking and arts advocacy to the provision of services for artists and arts organizations, as well as programming for children and seniors, BCA was the first organization in Bronx to focus equally on supporting local artists, serving the community, and catalyzing relationships between the two.

Since its founding, BCA has focused on the work of underrepresented groups, especially artists of color, women, and members of the LGBTQ community. We provide direct services to over 1,000 artists and 250 community-based arts groups each year, and thanks to our granting programs, we are able to touch the lives of over thousands of audience members.
