Joe Mendola, GOP candidate for NYC Comptroller, is calling for the full restoration of funding for the Public Advocate’s Office.

The drastic reduction in the funding for the NYC Public Advocate’s Office in the recently passed budget is a grave error.  Like the Comptroller’s Office, the Office of Public Advocate exists principally as a watchdog on behalf of City residents to ensure that City government and the services which it provides are delivered properly and in a manner which is responsive to the needs of City residents.

“One cannot help but see the irony in the Mayor and the City Council cutting funding for an office which exists to monitor City government. It’s sort of like the fox deciding that we can’t afford chicken wire to protect the hen house,” said Mendola.  “While we all appreciate the need to cut the City budget, we should not balance our books by weakening important City government watchdogs like the Public Advocate.”

Mendola, a Columbia Law School graduate and a lifelong New Yorker, is a financial risk manager and compliance specialist.  He lives in Greenwich Village and is the single father of 2 small children.
