Following legalization in states such as Florida and California, New York has smashed all betting records after registering $150 million worth of bets on sports during the first weekend that it was introduced legally to the public.

After its launch on January 08, 2022, betting industry experts are feeling incredibly excited about what lies ahead in the Big Apple. Many are expecting the $150 million figure to rise considerably further as sports betting completes its first full month, with some projections suggesting that New York could bring in $500 million during that time. Given the array of options available for sports bettors in the space, it certainly would not be too much of a surprise if New York did indeed reach that milestone.

Apps have been credited with New York’s opening weekend record in particular. There are now 5 sportsbooks in the Empire State, with FanDuel being the most popular so far. FanDuel is one of the easiest sportsbooks for betting fans to get to grips with and offers new bettors a chance to back their favorite sports team. Many people who want to get involved in betting seem put off by the possibility of getting started with a sports betting app, but it seems very easy to bet with FanDuel, even for those new to sports gambling.

Betting apps provide a range of benefits

The rise in usage of betting apps has coincided with the overall growth of sports betting, somewhat unsurprisingly. This is due to the fact that betting apps enable fans of sports to place bets with ease as and when they want to. Given the reliance we now have on modern-day smartphone devices, gaining access to an app can take seconds. Then, once you are signed up, these stand-alone applications enable people to enjoy an immersive betting experience in the palm of their hand.

One of the main benefits of using betting apps is undoubtedly down to the array of bonuses and promotions on offer also. These types of enticing offers are not available when visiting a land-based establishment, for example, and they give sports fans the opportunity to make the most of a betting experience while feeling like a valued member of what is a growing community. Common types of bonuses and promotions include welcome bonuses, deposit bonuses, daily promotions, boosted odds, cash out bonuses, and a whole lot more.

Illegal sportsbooks appear to be a thing of the past

Until what was nothing short of a momentous weekend in the sports betting arena, illegal operators were flooding the sports betting space. As such, fans were potentially accessing harmful websites which essentially put them and their personal details at risk. Now, with a number of legal operations registering huge success already, illegal sportsbooks will surely struggle to compete. Of the reported 1.2 million accounts which were created on January 08 2022, 878,000 were unique players. Additional data, which has been provided by GeoComply, suggests that 770,840 of users were trying regulated US sports betting for the first time ever.

On this, GeoComply Managing Director of Gaming Lindsay Slader said: “The momentum of New York’s sports betting launch has continued, and it is mostly home-grown. The vast majority of users are brand new to regulated sports betting in the U.S. The data tells us that New Yorkers are dumping illegal sportsbooks for the new legal options and operators are also excelling at attracting first-time bettors.”

More and more New Yorkers expected to jump onboard

With New York smashing all betting records during its opening weekend and the industry expected to gather further momentum in the coming months, an increasing number of sports fans in the city will surely discover the delights of sports betting. After all, New York is a sports-mad setting, containing fans from the likes of the New York Knicks, New York Giants, New York Yankees, New York Rangers, and the New York Red Bulls.
