Efforts to clean up the Bronx River have gotten a boost, thanks to $2.5 million in grants going to organizations and municipalities trying to fight water pollution.

The state attorney general’s office has allocated the funds from a $7 million settlement with the cities of Yonkers, White Plains, Scarsdale, and Greenburgh, and Yonkers Raceway in 2007. They were accused of dumping raw sewage into the 23-mile river.

Attorney General Andrew Cuomo announced Thursday that $2.5 million of the settlement will be used to fund projects that try to keep polluted storm water from entering the river. An additional $2.5 million in matching funds was also announced.

In 2009, Cuomo’s office allocated more than $1.8 million to river restoration projects.
