The following grievence was received in our offices today:

Dear Editor,

Thanks for taking my call today and letting me write you about this matter. As I mentioned on the phone, I wrote the NYS Attorney General today, however I do not know that I have much legal recourse besides going to Small Claims Court, which I cannot afford the time or money to do.

Gold Crest Care Center’s owner, Mark Solomon, refuses to pay me $175 for my musical performance on January 26, 2012. (They are located at 2316 Bruner Avenue, Bronx 10469.) My invoice is attached. Mostly I would like him to be exposed and penalized for what is clearly a money-making scheme, which oppresses self-employed artists such as myself, who have no way of collecting moneys due. The director, who hired me, Laura Kohn, told me she is leaving Mr. Solomon’s practice, which has gone through 7 activities directors in 10 years.

I do not make a lot of money but I do love my work entertaining seniors and the infirm (in fact a documentary film is currently being made about my pioneering work in music wellness). The worst thing about my work is trying to get paid for jobs I did months ago; I am currently owed almost $6K and have to spend too much of my time trying to get paid for services rendered. I would appreciate any assistance you can give me in this matter. Of course I will not work for Mr. Solomon again but I would still like to get paid, and I believe exposing people like him in the media is probably the most effective way to change their behavior.

Sincerely,

Jan Leder
