Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro announced today that Fire Marshals arrested Luis Ventura, 46, for murder related to a fire in the Bronx at 2185 Grand Concourse on December 17, 2006, as well as seven recent rubbish fires in Queens of this year.

“This arrest is an example of outstanding coordination between our Fire Marshals and the NYPD,” said Commissioner Nigro. “I commend all involved for their efforts to arrest a dangerous individual whose actions led to a death of an innocent New Yorker fourteen years ago.”

In May and June of this year, Fire Marshals responded to a series of rubbish fires in the Jamaica section of Queens along the vicinities of Highland Avenue, Parsons Boulevard, Hillside Avenue, and the Van Wyck Expressway that prompted an immediate investigation. After conducting interviews, as well as canvassing the area for surveillance video, Fire Marshals identified Luis Ventura to be a person of interest. A review of past records during the course of the investigation connected him to the unsolved 2006 incendiary firein the Bronx. On December 17, 2006, FDNY responded to at 2185 Grand Concourse for a report of a fire in the lobby. The fire took 12 units and 60 members to bring under control and resulted in 10 injuries, including one critically injured person who died from their injuries one month later.

With the new lead in this fatal fire from 2006, Fire Marshalsfrom the Bureau of Fire Investigation immediately launched a coordinated investigation with the NYPD’s Bronx Homicide Squad, the 102nd Precinct, and the Bronx District Attorney’s Office which resulted in the arrest of Ventura for the fatal fire.

Ventura is charged with murder, arson, criminal mischief and reckless endangerment. The case will be prosecuted by the Bronx District Attorney’s office.
