Liberty Coca Cola Beverages (Liberty) joined with the New York City Department of Education and Partnership for NYC’s first Career Discovery Week. The local Coca-Cola bottler hosted nearly 60 sophomores from neighborhood high schools for an interactive day at its Bronx Distribution Center, and spoke about the diverse and future job opportunities available to young people in the city’s corporate, financial and cultural sectors.

“Participating in the inaugural Career Discovery Week is an opportunity to show students the professional opportunities they have in their own backyard,” said Fran McGorry, Co-Owner and CEO, Liberty Coca-Cola Beverages. “We make it a priority to invest in our local communities and provide creative educational experiences that can spark ideas for creating pathways to rewarding careers.”

Liberty was one of 180 companies that hosted more than 6,000 students across New York for the citywide career day. At Liberty’s distribution center, students from Bronx Collegiate and Longwood Preparatory had the chance to hear from several speakers in various positions at Liberty, including supply chain transportation, customer marketing, analytics, engineering and public affairs.

Along with gaining insight into various career sectors, the students visited the distribution center with the purpose of building strong and lasting relationships with Liberty’s associates.

“We were thrilled to have the students join us at our distribution center to show them the wide-ranging positions available at our company,” said Mayra Linares-Garcia, Vice President, Public Affairs & Communication, Liberty Coca-Cola Beverages. “These personal interactions give us an opportunity to explain why we love what we do, and show how Liberty Coca-Cola Beverages is involved in the local community.”

After hearing from Liberty employees, the students put their networking skills to the test during a “speed networking session,” where they were pushed out of their comfort zones and tasked to make genuine connections. They also toured the entire distribution center and sampled products, including various flavors of Vitamin Water, Honest Tea and Sprite.

“We had a great opportunity to actually be at Liberty and learn directly from employees, as most people our age do not have this opportunity,” said Quaneisha Suitt, student at Bronx Collegiate. “I learned that everyone came from different backgrounds, but they’re here because they have a passion for the company, and when you do what you love, you succeed, and you help other people and you’re just a happier, better person.”

Yesterday’s event was part of Liberty’s larger commitment to education and the development of young people across its markets, which include New York City, New Jersey and Philadelphia. The company hosts tours in its other facilities, including South Brunswick, New Jersey and its production plant in North Philadelphia, and Liberty representatives are frequent guests speakers at various local secondary and higher education schools. Liberty also supports various nonprofits whose mission is to inspire and empower young people, such as Girls Inc. and the Police Athletic League.
