James Gleason, Mount Vernon’s longtime fire commissioner, passed away earlier today surrounded by family and friends.

Gleason, 77, was hospitalized at Calvary Hospital in Bronx with stage 4 throat cancer less than two months ago. Though the disease ultimately took his life, the commissioner stayed involved in the fire department and even attended a promotions ceremony for firefighters at City Hall.

Mount Vernon Mayor Ernie Davis says the entire city will feel Gleason’s loss.
