BlocPower Community Corporation, a non-profit with a mission to make city buildings greener, healthier, smarter, and more profitable for all, is launching “Green the Bronx,” a campaign to educate multifamily building owners and residents in the Bronx about the benefits of Cold Climate Air Source Heat Pumps (heat pumps), a clean heating and cooling technology. The campaign will target buildings that still use oil heating systems and educate building owners about the environmental, health, and financial benefits of switching to heat pumps.

BlocPower Community Corporation is managing one of 14 Clean Heating and Cooling Community Campaigns administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) throughout the state and is the only one operating in the Bronx. The campaigns support Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s Green New Deal, the most aggressive climate change program in the nation as well as the state’s nation-leading goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 85 percent by 2050.

The Bronx is well known for having one of the highest asthma rates in the U.S. due to the pollution and housing conditions. “Green the Bronx” is promulgating heat pumps, which are fuelfree and cause no particulate emissions. This will result in cleaner air in one of the highest asthma rate areas of the country. The systems also provide excellent filters to deliver superior indoor air quality.

“We are thrilled to work with NYSERDA on our shared mission to promote clean heating and cooling while providing cleaner and healthier communities.” said Donnel Baird, Founder and CEO of BlocPower Community Corporation.

Bronx multifamily building owners that get heat pumps will lower their operating costs, increase their profits, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve the health and comfort of their tenants. They can pay cash or lease their systems for no money down and benefit from a 15-year performance guarantee.

BlocPower is working with Bronx groups, including The Bronx Neighborhood Housing Services, The Hope Program, and Urban Homesteading Assistance Board (UHAB), as community partners. Many of the partners are encouraging building owners in their networks to see if their buildings are eligible for heat pump installations. In addition, BlocPower will seek to train and hire contractors and workers based in the Bronx to drive economic development.

The Green the Bronx Launch Party will be this Thursday, October 17th, at the Bronx Alehouse from 05:00 – 08:00 p.m. All are welcome. To RSVP, please visit here.
