On Sunday, October 18, 2009 at 9:30am, students and staff members from the Felisa Rincón de Gautier Institute for Law and Public Policy, a small Bronx public high school called GILPP, gathered together at Orchard Beach in the Bronx to participate in the 6th Annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

GLIPP campus.

Service is an integral component of the GILPP’s instructional program. The pouring rain did not stop staff members like Principal Grismaldy Laboy-Wilson and English Teacher Joanna Robinson, or students like Keith Frazier, Jean Machuca, Luceli Polanco, and Jasmine Roque who walked for a cause.

The students collected over $300 in donations for the American Cancer Society. Donations can still be made online at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer website under GILPP Team. Students will continue to raise money for the American Cancer Society as they continue their Penny Harvest initiative this semester. The school is very proud of their students’ positive efforts as they strive to BELIEVE, ACHIEVE and SUCCEED.

About GILPP

The purpose of the Felisa Rincon de Gautier Institute for Law and Public Policy (the GILPP) is to promote growth within students and the community. The GILPP creates a respectful environment where students feel safe exploring new ideas. Growth through learning gives us the power to understand what needs to change in society and the tools we need to make those changes. Our mission statement reflects the belief that all students possess leadership qualities. Across all content areas, the GILPP has a group of essential questions that challenge students to take a critical look at themselves and their relationship to the community vis-a-via the law and public policy.
