Former Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik is out of federal prison.

Kerik returned to his Franklin Lakes, NJ home Tuesday morning after being released from a Maryland prison where he served three years of a four year sentence.

Upon his arrival, he hugged his family on the steps of his house and waved to the media gathered outside.

He did not take any questions.

The former police commissioner served federal prison time for tax fraud and making false statements.

It was a drastic downfall for Kerik, who in 2004 was nominated to serve as secretary of Homeland Security during the Bush adminstration. But it was that appointment’s vetting process that led to his downfall.

The charges, in part, stemmed from renovations made on Kerik’s Bronx apartment, renovations that were done on the cheap and by a company with connections to organized crime.

At his New Jersey home Tuesday, there was a steady stream of visitors. At one point, eight cars filled up his driveway, and a passing vehicle actually yelled out, “He should have never gone to jail” at the large group of media standing near his property.

It was also clear by the catering van that arrived the Keriks were celebrating his return.

It is unclear what could be up next for Kerik.
