In 45 minutes of play, both Fordham University and the University of Richmond hit seven three-pointers but it was the final long distance shot for the Spiders that proved to be the difference as Kendall Anthony buried a trifecta with 13 seconds left in overtime to break a 72-72 tie and lead the visitors to a 77-74 win over the Rams in an Atlantic 10 game in the Rose Hill Gym.

With the loss, Fordham’s fourth straight, the Rams fall to 7-8 overall, 0-2 in the Atlantic 10, while Richmond improves to 11-6 overall, 1-1 in the conference.

Senior guard Branden Frazier helped the Rams force overtime, scoring 20 of his game-high 29 points in the second half, rallying Fordham from a ten-point deficit to force the extra session. Frazier had a chance to win the game in regulation for the Rams but his jumper came up short and Jon Severe couldn’t get a shot off after grabbing the rebound.

Fordham took an early lead in the overtime, thanks to a Severe three-pointer 40 seconds into the period but a Cedrick Lindsay layup a minute later knotted the score at 67.

A pair of Severe free throws with 2:57 left put the Rams up two, and Fordham had a chance to extend the lead to six over the next minute but Ryan Rhoomes and Travion Leonard each could only hit one of two free throws, giving the Rams a 72-67, lead with 1:45 on the clock.

A Lindsay three-point play with 1:36 remaining cut the Richmond deficit to two, 72-70, before he hit two charity shots with just under a minute left to tie the game for the eleventh and final time.

Severe missed a three for the Rams with 42 seconds left, giving the ball back to Richmond and setting up Anthony’s three-pointer that gave the Spiders the lead for good.

Fordham’s Chris Whitehead was fouled with eight seconds left but missed both free throws, the second intentionally, and Derrick Williams hit two for the Spiders a second later to make it a five-point game, 77-72.

A Frazier layup at the buzzer provided the final margin.

The Rams tailed by ten, 54-44, 8:35 left in regulation when Frazier got hot, leading the Rams on an 13-2 run as Fordham took its first lead of the half, 57-56, following a Frazier jumper with 3:42 left. Frazier scored ten of the 13 points in the run, the other three coming on a Severe three-point that ignited the run.

A pair of Alonzo Nelson-Ododa helped Richmond regain the lead with 3:32 left before Leonard hit one of two free throws to tie the game at 58 with 3:18 on the clock.

Frazier buried a three-pointer with 2:36 left to put Fordham up three, 61-58, but a three-point play 22 seconds later retied the game at 61.

Lindsay hit a jumper with 1:28 remaining to give the Spiders a two-point lead, 63-61, before a Rhoomes layup 15 seconds later tied the game to force the overtime.

Frazier added six rebounds and three assists to go with his 29 points while Severe finished with 19 points and Rhoomes added eight points and eleven rebounds and Ryan Canty chipped in with seven points and eleven boards.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday night, January 15, as they host the University of Dayton Flyers in an Atlantic 10 matchup in the Rose Hill Gym at 9:00 p.m. in a game that will be televised live on SportsNet NY (SNY).

Notes:

The 29 points brings Frazier’s career total to 1,361, good for 13th on the Fordham all-time scoring list, nine points behind Charlie Yelverton (1968-71) for 12th… Canty’s eleven rebounds was a season-high… The Rams outrebounded Richmond, 49-35, the sixth time this year that Fordham has outrebounded its opponent (the Rams are 4-2 in those games)… The game was the first overtime game of the year for Fordham… The new class of Fordham Athletic Hall of Famers were honored at halftime as was head football coach Joe Moorhead… Michael Kay, ESPN radio host and voice of the New York Yankees, was in attendance after serving as the emcee at the Hall of Fame dinner… The Spiders have now won seven straight over the Rams and lead the all-time series, 12-7.
