Authorities said they apprehended the vandal, who recently poured a liquid, believed to be gasoline, on an occupied New York City Police Department van.

Christopher Springs, 22, of the Bronx, was apprehended around 03:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 15, 2021, in connection with the Friday night incident at Valentine Avenue and E. 180th Street in Fordham, near the 46th Precinct station house on Ryer Avenue in the Bronx.

A raucous crowd was already throwing eggs and trash at the marked NYPD van, when surveillance video caught Spring holding a red gas can and pouring liquid — which smelled like gas — all over the vehicle’s exterior and hood, authorities and prosecutors said.

According to police and prosecutors, the driver, who was in the car with his partner, quickly drove away before anything worse happened. Nobody was hurt.

Arrested:

Christopher Springs
2039 Bathgate Avenue
Bronx, NY 10457

Charges:

Prosecutors say Springs and about ten others threw metal barricades into the air outside the 46th Precinct about two hours earlier.

Some members of the group, who have not been arrested, are accused of throwing barricades at officers.

Springs was granted supervised release during his arraignment, despite prosecutors’ request for $35,000 cash or $75,000 bond, according to the Bronx District Attorney’s Office.

Springs’ release was described as “disgusting” by an unnamed senior law enforcement source.

According to the source, after being read his Miranda rights, Springs allegedly claimed that he was “radicalized by lies” by anti-police agitators.

According to authorities, the suspect has no prior arrests.

The investigation remains ongoing.

All charges are merely accusations and all defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
