Comptroller Stringer attended at a roundtable on the lack of comprehensive child care services in Bronx yesterday evening (Monday, August 19th) at East Side House Day Settlement’s Mott Haven Early Childhood Education Center.

The event took place at 06:00 p.m. at 375 East 143rd Street in Bronx and was an intimate roundtable discussion alongside representatives in the space of day care, children’s services, and health in the borough.

The discussion also included Comptroller Stringer’s NYC Under 3 proposal, which aims to significantly expand the provision of child care to families in need. It is an important issue in Bronx particularly as the report found that nearly half of all community districts in the city are child care deserts, defined as neighborhoods with a ratio of child care capacity to children under two of less than 20 percent.

Partly due to the relatively high number of family day care providers in Bronx, no neighborhood in the borough meets that definition. However, center-based capacity is very limited, particularly in Castle Hill, Highbridge, and Morris Park, where there are either no day care center slots for infants or only enough for roughly one out of every 100 neighborhood children under two.
