Highbridge Community Life Center (HCLC) is responding to the needs of Bronx job-training disparities by extending a unique Certified Nurse Aide training program that includes an internship and assistance with job placement.

The six-month program, which is at no cost to participants, prepares students to take and pass the state certification examination and includes  clinical instruction, CPR and First Aid. As the health care industry continues to grow, Highbridge makes valuable training accessible to low-income community residents.

“Our goal is to provide quality training in a field that can give students the financial security that they need,” says Highbridge Director of Education, Linda Avitabile. “We offer job placement services and counseling for students, and provide an educational environment that they can always return to.”

Highbridge Community Life Center is a leader in providing free and low-cost, quality adult education to the Bronx community.  The main location at 1438 Ogden Avenue offers courses in citizenship, ESL, basic education and GED and job training. The health careers unit—started over fifteen years ago—initially only offered training to become a Certified Nurse’s Aid (CNA).  HCLC has since expanded to include Phlebotomy/EKG, Patient Care Technician training.

The Graduation is scheduled for Wednesday, January 19th, 2011 at the West Bronx Recreation Center on 1527 Jesup Avenue at 6:00 PM.  Thirty-two students will graduate at that time and after three months, be eligible for other health career courses that Highbridge offers.

“If a student graduates our CNA program, they can matriculate into the Phlebotomy/EKG and PCT programs at no cost,” Avitabile continues. “We make it a point to develop lasting relationships with every student that comes to Highbridge, and assist as many of them with finding employment as possible.”

According to the US Department of Labor, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in December 2010 that the unemployment rate in New York City is currently at 8.3%. That is a significant decrease from 10.6% in December 2009, when unemployed residents in the state increased to 868,600 from 832,200 (according to a state Labor Department report.)

It is the Highbridge mission to ensure that amidst a recovering economy, we are providing students the training they need to be competitive applicants.
