Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) Commissioner Vilda Vera Mayuga and Council Member Marjorie Velázquez today celebrated National Small Business Month by kicking off a series of Business Education Days in Morris Park. Council Member Velázquez, Commissioner Mayuga, Camelia Tepelus, Executive Director of the Morris Park Business Improvement District, and several local merchants went door-to-door answering questions and informing small businesses about what they need to know to comply with the City’s business laws, which cover consumer and workplace protection, licensing, weights and measures, and more. This is the first in a series of more than a dozen education days that DCWP will conduct across the five boroughs.

“DCWP strives to create a culture of compliance with our city’s laws, and that begins with making sure our local businesses feel confident that they have the knowledge and resources necessary to comply,” said DCWP Commissioner Vilda Vera Mayuga. “Thank you to Council Member Velázquez for hosting us today and we look forward to working together to hold more events throughout the coming months.”

“Today’s visit provided merchants and workers with critical information for long-term success. This is the first time Commissioner Mayuga has been on this side of the district and it’s been a pleasure sharing with her all that Morris Park has to offer,” said Council Member Marjorie Velázquez, Chair of the Committee on Consumer and Worker Protection. “Our workers and businesses can only thrive if they can access such information. It is about empowering our businesses and our workers every step of the way, and ensuring they know their rights and what resources are available to them.”

Throughout the event, local merchants and workers had an opportunity to meet with DCWP staff to learn about resources, including DCWP’s Financial Empowerment Centers, which offer free one-on-one professional financial counseling to support business owners and workers. They also had an opportunity to learn more about NYC’s Fair Workweek Law, as well as tobacco licensing and general retail information.

“This was a great opportunity for the businesses in Morris Park to interact with our city officials to ask questions and learn about their services, particularly our newest businesses,” said Camelia Tepelus, Executive Director of the Morris Park Business Improvement District. “Communicating directly with local merchants and workers is essential to the growth of our local economy. We are pleased to be joined by Commissioner Mayuga and Councilmember Velázquez, and look forward to continue working with them.”
