New York City Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB) Chair Fred Davie issued the following statement on Sunday.

“If you were the victim of, or witness to, misconduct by a member of the NYPD, New York City has an independent entity dedicated entirely to investigating police misconduct. For the last 26 years, the independent, all-civilian CCRB has served New Yorkers, who in November voted to strengthen it.

“With all due respect to the other entities conducting their own investigations into the larger issues surrounding the protests, I urge anyone who has an issue with a specific incident of misconduct to file with the CCRB, even if you have already filed with a different entity. Since May 29, hundreds of people have complained about more than 80 incidents that took place during recent demonstrations. Agency investigators are already speaking to witnesses and collecting evidence in these matters. The CCRB is committed to fully and fairly investigating ALL of these cases.

“At the foundation of any meaningful police reform is a commitment to transparency and accountability, and that starts with a commitment to a thorough, independent review process. The CCRB was created specifically for this purpose and must be at the forefront in this moment.”

About New York City Civilian Complaint Review Board

The New York City Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB) is the largest police oversight entity in the nation and is empowered to investigate, mediate, prosecute, and recommend disciplinary action for complaints alleging misconduct by NYPD officers. See NYC Charter § 440(c)(1).

The agency’s jurisdiction includes excessive and unnecessary force, abuse of authority, discourtesy, and use of offensive language.

To further this mission, CCRB issues monthly, biannual, and special statistical and qualitative reports analyzing trends and recurring issues arising from the many thousands of civilian complaints it receives each year.
