A Bronx woman was charged with petty larceny, a class A misdemeanor, after stealing $600 from Marathon Gold City, police said. The suspect, Jacqueline Johnson, is also responsible for other thefts in the area, according to police.
Johnson, 46, walked into Marathon Gold City on Wednesday at 08:40 p.m. and spoke to an employee about “several items” that were for sale, police said. The store manager had placed $600 on a table close to the front door prior to Johnson entering. She left at 08:47 p.m. and then the employee noticed the money was missing, police said. He checked the security camera and confirmed it was Johnson who took the cash, police said.
Johnson had placed a bag close to where the money had been placed, police said, and she distracted the employee while reaching for the cash, which is on the security camera footage.
The Pelham Manor Police Department was not notified of the incident, but Johnson was seen walking around the area of Mountain Gold City on Thursday at 08:00 p.m. The employee saw her walking past the store and told the store security guard who tried to confront and detain her, police said. She tried to flee, but was apprehended by Pelham Manor police officers. The employee confirmed that she was responsible for the larceny and a search of Johnson revealed she had several items stuffed in her purse from surrounding stores, police said.
The Dress Barn manager believed Johnson had stolen from the store, but did not wish to pursue charges on the $49.99 item of clothing, according to police. The HomeGoods manager also confirmed the two glass bowls Johnson had on her, totaling $25.98, had been taken from the store and said he would contact the police if he wanted to place charges after the security footage was looked at, police said.
Johnson was brought to the Pelham Manor Police Department Headquarters, processed, and released on $400 bail. Her court date at Pelham Town Court was set for Thursday night.
