New York firm Stantec and its team work for the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation and the New York City Economic Development Corporation.

They have restored a vacant building along the Harlem River in Bronx into a sustainable public and commercial building, earning “gold” certification in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) building rating system.

Bronx Power House interior view. The Power House at Mill Pond Park near Yankee Stadium received 40 credits in the LEED program, exceeding the energy efficiency and sustainability standards for a gold-level certification in the building performance rating system. The building features high-efficiency plumbing fixtures to reduce projected water use by over 40%, a green roof and energy-efficient heating and cooling system to save over 20% in energy costs, and nearly 40% recycled or locally made building materials, among other green elements.

The former Power House served the Bronx Terminal Market for over 35 years before falling into disuse and disrepair. As talks for a new Yankee Stadium began, the City completed an Environmental Impact Statement and signed an agreement with the NYS Historic Preservation Office to preserve this structure and improve other areas along the waterfront. The rehabilitation of the Power House took over three years and involved maintaining many of the building’s historic features while transforming it into a modern, public building. The space currently houses public restrooms, a community space, and New York City Department of Parks & Recreation (NYCDPR) offices and is expected to shortly have additional occupants serving retail, commercial, and cultural functions.

“The truest form of sustainability is being able to harness all the energy embodied in an existing building and turn it back into a community resource,” says James Nelson, Stantec architect and project manager. “We’re very proud of the new LEED rating, but the true success has been watching this historic building come back to life in the Bronx community.”

The NYCDPR has already begun using its new space in the Power House. Stantec has helped restore several other historic buildings in Manhattan, including Vanderbilt Hall in Grand Central Station and the current project to revitalize the New York Life building at 346 Broadway. The firm is also designing Heritage Field, a new community park in the footprint of the former Yankee Stadium.
