Approximately 21% of Bronx respondents rate the overall quality of life in NYC as “Excellent” or “Good” in 2023, down from roughly 41% in 2017—according to Straight from New Yorkers, a recently released report by The Citizens Budget Commission (CBC). This data includes citywide as well as borough-respective ratings, which allows for easy comparisons between the Bronx and other boroughs. For example, 26% of Queens respondents rated quality of life in NYC as either “Excellent” or “Good” in 2023. The Survey Navigator tool allows for breakdowns of ratings by location and demographics.

Other Bronx highlights include:

  • On neighborhood safety, 35.9% of Bronx respondents gave a rating of “Somewhat Safe” or “Very Safe” when asked about “walking alone in your neighborhood at night,” down from 52.1% in 2017.
  • Bronx respondents who rated quality of life in NYC negatively, as “Poor,” increased from 16.5% in 2008 to 45.5% in 2023.
  • Positive ratings of subway safety during the day decreased from 68% in 2017 to 37.7% in 2023, while 61.9% of residents generally disapproved of subway services in 2023.
  • Ratings of “Poor” for rat control services in their neighborhood increased from 39.1% in 2008 to 56.9% in 2023.
  • More than half of Bronx respondents are happy with fire protection services, with 55.7% rating it as “Excellent” or “Good.”
  • Ratings of “Poor” for bus services in their neighborhood increased from 13.5% in 2008 to 20.5% in 2023.
  • Overall quality of NYC Government Services ratings saw a decline, as only 24.2% of Bronxites were satisfied with citywide services.
  • “This feedback straight from New Yorkers is a valuable tool to help focus priorities and drive improvements across all parts of the city,” CBC President Andrew Rein said.

Straight from New Yorkers is on the results of the CBC 2023 Resident Survey—a statistically valid, post-pandemic view into how residents across all five boroughs feel about overall quality of life in New York City and about the quality of government services. By essentially replicating CBC’s 2017 and the City’s 2008 surveys, New Yorkers’ current views can be compared to previous surveys’ ratings.
