The Bronx Opera Company celebrates 50 years with some incredible music.
As the Bronx Opera Company marks 50 years, founder Michael Spierman is still convincing skeptics that, yes, there is an opera company in Bronx.
“Well, some of them think it’s an oxymoron. The idea is to basically change minds in the best way possible — by example,” Spierman said. “And someone like Kirsten is an example who has gone on to these very proud moments.”
And of course, after 50 years there are so many great memories
“The first Bronx Opera performance on Thanksgiving weekend, 24th of November of 1967,” Spierman said. “I have this memory of just the sound of 35 opera singers singing around me, and I think it probably is one of the reasons I do what I do now. That and the cool costume.”
The 50th anniversary season kicks off with “Sir John In Love” this weekend at Lehman College and next weekend at the Kaye Playhouse. Every opera is always done in English. Tickets start at $20.
