The Bronx Museum of the Arts is accepting applications for its celebrated AIM Fellowship program (formerly Artist In the Marketplace). Entering its 40th year, the AIM Fellowship provides career boosting resources to New York City’s most promising emerging visual artists. The Fellowship’s no-cost workshops and seminars offer intimate access to leading experts and cultural producers that guide artists on the practicalities of developing a sustainable studio practice in today’s competitive arts and culture ecosystems.

Two cohorts of artists (Spring and Fall) are selected on the basis of need and merit by a jury of arts professionals who will take part in a four-month long course of professional development workshops, seminars, and community-building activities. AIM Fellows walk away empowered with key resources to improve artist statements, project financing, communication, marketing, and other areas of career management. As New York’s creative communities remain vulnerable to market forces, AIM offers artists an opportunity to engage in strategic career development while building close-knit relationships with peers and industry insiders through on-going engagement and off-site activities.

AIM’s incomparable faculty are active and respected industry experts that offer unfiltered insight on the inner workings of the art market. AIM’s workshops are currently led by Brian Boucher (arts journalist), Robin Cembalest (media strategist), Monika Fabijanska (independent curator), Cara Jordan (art historian and editor), Mary Mattingly (artist), Rebecca Selkowe (financial planner), Sergio Muñoz Sarmiento (Art+Law Program), Melissa Rachleff Burtt (NYU), and Lauren Wittels (Luhring Augustine), among others.

Selected topics

  • The Art Market – Artists take part in a series of conversations about the current art market focusing on recent trends in the art business, building relationships with galleries and curators, and understanding power dynamics in the art world.
  • The Artist Statement – Successful strategies for improving artist statements are workshopped with emphasis on avoiding the common pitfalls of artspeak.
  • Funding Opportunities – Practical guidance on researching funding opportunities and developing competitive applications for grants, residencies, and fellowships, is emphasized with the aim of helping artists find support for their work.
  • Art & Law – Legal issues such as intellectual property, appropriation, and authorship are highlighted in this series of seminars that also sheds light on commonly used legal instruments typically encountered in an emerging artist’s career.
  • Media Management – Best practices for building and engaging audiences across communication channels, as well as preparing for public speaking engagements, are the focus of these workshops.
  • Financial Literacy – Artist taxes and investment strategies are featured in this seminar on learning to become more empowered with limited financial resources.
  • Career Planning – Learning how to set attainable goals, building aspirational road maps, and adopting positive and productive mindsets are explored in a sequence of seminars on learning to establish sustainable careers.

AIM’s practical guidance has helped a number of New York artists navigate the artworld, including graduates such as Njideka Akunyili-CrosbyPolly ApfelbaumAbigail DeVilleLaToya Ruby FrazierPablo HelgueraByron KimGlenn LigonMiguel LucianoSarah OppenheimerErik ParkerJacolby Satterwhite, and Anton Vidokle, among many others.
