Open to professional and avocational writers of all ages and abilities, the Bronx Memoir Project offers free, professionally-led memoir writing workshops across Bronx. Aligned with BCA’s mission to elevate local narratives and stories, the Bronx Memoir Project helps amplify local voices through an array of writing tools, along with the professional development needed for writers to publish on their own. The memoir-writing workshops culminate with the publication of selected works by workshop attendees in the latest volume of our ongoing Bronx Memoir Project anthology series.

BMP 2019-2020

The enhanced 2019-2020 BMP will offer six intensive sessions of four workshops each, focusing on Narrative Poetry, Narrative Non-Fiction, and Essay Writing. A total of 24-workshops will be offered in the fall and spring.

The fall four-week Narrative Non-Fiction session will take place at BCA’s new home in Westchester Square from September 19th to October 10th.  The Narrative Poetry session will take place at Bronx Library Center from October 19th to November 9th. Workshops on Essay Writing will take place from November 5thto November 16th at a location to be announced shortly.

The remaining genre-based workshop sessions will continue in January at diverse locations across Bronx. BMP will culminate with the publication of an Anthology of contributed memoirs and book launch celebration in June 2020.

Note: To be published in this year’s BMP Volume IV Anthology, participants must attend a minimum of three workshops within the same series, whether in the fall or spring. Writers can enjoy as many sessions and/or individual workshops as they wish during both seasons.

Workshops are led by experienced writers and teaching artists, and consist of trust-building and contextualizing exercises, style and technique, sharing and feedback, and editing tips to prepare participants’ submissions for publication.

2018-2019 BMP Anthology Series

The 2018-2019 BMP culminated in the Bronx Memoir Project Volume III Anthology and book launch in June 2019.

This meaningful program is made possible in part with support from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).

About Bronx Council On The Arts

Founded by visionary community leaders in 1962, the Bronx Council on the Arts (BCA) is dedicated to advancing cultural equity in Bronx. From creative placemaking and arts advocacy to the provision of services for artists and arts organizations, as well as programming for children and seniors, BCA was the first organization in Bronx to focus equally on supporting local artists, serving the community, and catalyzing relationships between the two.

Since its founding, BCA has focused on the work of underrepresented groups, especially artists of color, women, and members of the LGBTQ community. We provide direct services to over 1,000 artists and 250 community-based arts groups each year, and thanks to our granting programs, we are able to touch the lives of over thousands of audience members.
