New York city police officers shot and killed a man after he fired several rounds at them during a shootout in the Woodstock section of the Bronx on Saturday.

The incident began at around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday when two police officers in the area were flagged down by pedestrians who said there was an armed man nearby. At the same time, dispatchers were receiving 911 calls of shots fired. Two additional officers responded as well.

Officials say the four officers found the 31-year-old suspect carrying a semiautomatic handgun, and ordered him to drop the weapon. Instead of obeying orders, the man opened fire. The officers responded by firing at him once in the chest.

The man, whose name has yet to be released, was taken to Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center, where he later died.

A .32-caliber semi-automatic handgun was recovered at the scene. According to a police source, three officers fired shots.

The shooting officers were taken to Jacobi Medical Center for trauma, police said. An investigation is ongoing.
