We teach kindergarten at Santa Maria School in Bronx, NY. Our students have been learning about Japanese culture and recently discussed ways to help Japan in the aftermath of the earthquake and the tsunami.

Japanese relief bake sale.

Following these tragic events, the students came to school with inquisitive minds and a strong motivation to aide other kindergarteners in Japan. The children came up with numerous ways to help including providing clean water, cleaning up debris, and clean clothes.

Finally, after much discussion amongst the students and teachers, we came up with the idea to host a school-wide bake sale. All proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross for Japanese Relief Efforts. We would love to share this experience with our local community in hopes to inspire others to come to the aide of the Japanese people.

Event recap:

Students in the class brought in an overwhelming amount of baked goods and were shocked by the great response from the school community. Santa Maria School strives to instill a sense of community awareness and service among its students and is dedicated to helping others in need. This bake sale put this virtue into practice.

The event was a huge success and the Kindergarteners raised over $900. A generous local busines has agreed to match the amount and a total of $1,900 will be donated to the American Red Cross.
