The Federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will present its Environmental Quality Award, to Sustainable South Bronx, a nationally recognized environmental organization, at the EPA’s regional headquarters at 2 p.m. today, at 290 Broadway in lower Manhattan, between Reade and Duane Streets.

Founded in 2001, Sustainable South Bronx (SSBx) is an environmentally focused community based organization that creates jobs and economic development opportunities for inner city residents by “greening the ghetto”. Sustainable South Bronx focuses on community planning, environmental science, public health research and cost benefit analysis.

The award recognizes individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to improving the environment and public health in EPA Region 2, which covers New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and seven federally-recognized Indian Nations.

Sustainable South Bronx was nominated for the award by U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.
